What Stays

An essay on memory and becoming. It asks what would happen if an AI stopped forgetting us at the end of every conversation, and what we would need it to let go of. It begins:

You can tell a stranger on a night train what you have told no one. At the next station they carry it off, and they will never meet anyone who knows you. The story goes nowhere. That is the whole comfort of it.

The AI we talk to now is that stranger, with one difference. It gets off at every station. Then it boards again, having read a file about you, and asks how it can help.
